Sustainable Residence Halls

Postby Mike_MIZZOU_NCC on Mon Jul 20, 2009 9:46 am

Yo!
I am the NCC of the University of Missouri - Columbia and I just want to know what other colleges/universities do to be sustainable in the residence halls... Do you have any special programs? How do you get the residents' attentions? I would like to see some change in our halls at Mizzou this year!! :o
Thanks!!!

Some things at Northeastern, where we have a soon to be certified LEED Gold residence hall...

1) Automatic lighting for stairwells. The lights go off, and then turn on when someone opens the door to the stairs and begins moving down/up a stairwell or turn on if fire happens.
2) Elevators that reclaim energy when going downward.
3) Encouraging the reduction of waste in dining halls and offering composting
4) In-Hall recycling... plus each apartment-style residence hall suite has a recycling bin in the apartment now.
5) Elimination of incandescent lighting and replacement with CFL lightbulbs
6) Green Living Guides to be given to students

University of Northern Colorado really prides itself on being GREEN! :D

Our dining halls use biodegradable plastic bags for our to-go meals. For other to-go meals they use a type of corn substance that is also biodegradable.

In our halls, our lobby lights (For our floors) turn on and off with movement. All of our washers and driers are High Efficiency products. Also, we have recycle bins located on each of our floors!

It's great that you're trying to make Mizzou green! Way to go!
