A Letter from the Director
Hello,
and welcome to the North East Affiliate of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls! NEACURH is devoted to improving the quality of life in the residence halls. Not only do we strive to do this on the regional level, but we also utilize the resources that are available from the national organization. This year marks our region's 18th anniversary.
NEACURH is comprised of students who participate in sharing resources and ideas by attending conferences and communicating with each other through extensive networks, such as email listservs and forums that facilitate idea sharing. Each school elects one student to be its representative as the National Communication Coordinator (NCC). This person prepares delegations to attend regional and national conferences, as well as carries the voting rights for their school in all business meetings. These meetings, which are usually held during conferences, NCCs have the opportunity to discuss and decide on awards, legislation, and electing the group of students that lead the organization, the Regional Board of Directors. Before each conference, the NCC, RHA President, and NRHH President also have the opportunity to attend a sub-regional meeting in order to prepare themselves for the business that goes on at conferences, as well as discuss possible problems and successes on their campus, the region, and the nation.
NEACURH currently represents approximately 45 member schools, and we're always looking to welcome new ones! As an organization, we focus on 4 major areas: Programming, Leadership, Recognition, and Communication. One of the ways these goals are met is through our conferences. Almost all of the programs at our conferences are prepared and presented by students! This in itself serves two functions: the students who prepare the programs gain experience in public speaking, and also become experts in what they present. The students who attend programs benefit from the information provided to them and get to bring back what they learn to their home campuses. These programs vary widely in topic, covering student leadership, programming suggestions, and personal development, among many others. Also, every conference is hosted and planned by NEACURH member school, providing those students with a rewarding and challenging leadership opportunity.
Communication happens constantly throughout the year with the assistance of our Regional Board of Directors and NCCs. Each NCC is encouraged to send out information about events they have been doing over our Regional email listservs, or post questions and concerns on the NACURH Forum. In addition, we publish our regional newsletter, The Monthly Moose Calling, with informative articles and information to help schools succeed. Advisors, RHA Presidents, and NRHH Presidents also have their own listservs to communicate with other schools and get valuable information at any point throughout the year.
Recognition is accomplished through awards and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). NEACURH has many awards recognizing students, advisors as well as student organizations. NRHH is a service of both NEACURH and NACURH, as an honor society for student leaders in the residence halls. Each chapter of NRHH is allowed a membership of 1% of their schools total on-campus population or 20 members, whichever is higher. NRHH chapters also serve their schools by engaging in both community service and recognition programming. Most notably, NRHH is the sponsor of the Of-The-Month (OTM) program. Each school, whether they have an affiliated chapter of NRHH or not, has the opportunity to nominate students and organizations on their campuses in various OTM categories. Some categories include: RA, Student, Executive Board member, Advisor, Social, and Educational Program. These awards are a way for us to recognize all the hard work that our member schools put into their chapters. In addition to deciding these awards on the regional level, each OTM is submitted nationally for consideration for a National Of The Month award.
NACURH and its affiliates truly create a one of a kind organization. Along with the business we conduct and the services we provide, we also give our students a sense of community and family. The energy and passion expressed at our conferences simply cannot be matched. When students who have taken part in NEACURH graduate they take with them not only leadership skills, but memories and friendships.
I am honored to serve you as director, and look forward to hearing your suggestions, ideas, and questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me!
Lindsay Peck
NEACURH Regional Director 2007-2009
NEACURH is not your ordinary region of NACURH; I am continually astonished by the spirit, energy, and enthusiasm these students have toward not just themselves but other schools and regions, too. As an advisor, NEACURH has a profound affect on my work by moving as a complete region rather than a select set of active schools. This network of support and communication enables students and advisors alike to act more effectively while still having a moose-load of fun!
I have some great memories of my time in NEACURH, from attending conferences and subregional meetings to being a member of the RBD, NEACURH has only enhanced my college experience. The friends that I have made will last me a lifetime and the organization is a valuable tool for any school looking to create a better residence community on their campus.
