A Letter from the Director

Julie Rizzolo
Julie Rizzolo
Regional Director

Hello,

Thank you for visiting our website and welcome to the North East Affiliate of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls! NEACURH is one of eight regional affiliates of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Inc. (NACURH). NEACURH and NACURH are organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life for all students living in residence halls. NEACURH and NACURH are completely student run organizations and make up the largest student-run organization in the world!

NEACURH is built of student leaders who participate in sharing resources and ideas by attending regional and national conferences, and communicating with one another through extensive networks, such as email listservs and social networking sites that facilitate these ideals. Each affiliated school elects one student to act as their representative to the region as the National Communications Coordinator (NCC). This individual has the distinct responsibility to prepare their delegations (groups of students that represent their school) to attend regional and national conferences, as well as holds their schools vote within the NCC boardroom. During these meetings, occurring throughout conferences, NCCs have the ability to discuss and decide on awards, legislation, and electing the new group of students to lead the regional organization, the Regional Board of Directors (RBD). They are the foundation upon which the rest of the organization is built on. Prior to each conference, the NCC, RHA President, and NRHH President have the opportunity to attend a sub-regional meeting in order to prepare themselves for the business that goes on at conferences. During this time these individuals have a chance to discuss possible challenges and successes within their campus, the region, and the nation.

NEACURH currently represents over 50 member schools and over 265,000 resident students, and we are always looking to welcome new ones! As an organization, we focus on 4 aspects of Residence Hall living during conferences: Programming, Leadership, Recognition, and Communication. One of the ways these goals are met is through our conferences. Almost all of the programs presented at our conferences are prepared and presented by students! This in itself serves two functions: the students who prepare the programs gain experience in public speaking, and also act as a resource to other schools on that subject matter. The students who attend programs benefit from the information provided to them and have the ability to bring what they learn back to their home campuses. These programs can vary in topic, from student leadership, to planning and executing programs, to personal development, and so many more. Each conference is hosted and planned by a NEACURH member school, providing those students with a rewarding and challenging leadership opportunity.

Communication occurs constantly throughout the year with the assistance of the RBD and NCCs. Each NCC is encouraged to send out information about events they have been doing over our Regional email listservs. In addition, we publish our regional newsletter, The Monthly Moose Calling, which includes articles and information to help our schools succeed. Advisors, RHA Presidents, and NRHH Presidents also have their own listservs to facilitate communicate with other schools and gain valuable information at any point throughout the year.

Recognition is accomplished through the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) and regional awards. NEACURH has many awards recognizing students, advisors as well as their organizations. NRHH is a honor society of RHAs, NEACURH and NACURH for student leaders. Each chapter of NRHH is allowed a membership of 1% of the total on-campus population of their school or 20 members, whichever is higher. NRHH chapters also focus on engaging their campus communities through community service and recognition programming. Most notably, NRHH is the sponsor of the Of-The-Month (OTM) program. Each school has the opportunity to nominate students, faculty and organizations on their campuses in various OTM categories. Some categories include: RA, Student, Executive Board member, Advisor, Social Program, Educational Program and Faculty. In addition to deciding these awards on the campus wide level, each OTM is submitted regionally and nationally for the ability to be selected as a Regional or National Of The Month award.

NACURH and its affiliates truly create a one of a kind organization. Along with the business we conduct and the services we provide, our member schools become part of an unwavering support system and gain a sense of community and family. The energy, passion and enthusiasm shown by each individual at our conferences simply cannot be matched. When students who have taken part in NEACURH graduate they take with them not only leadership skills and programming ideas, but also memories, friendship and the experience of a lifetime.

The Regional Board of Directors and I are so excited to see all that you and your schools accomplish this year! I am honored to serve as your regional director this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the RBD with any questions, comments, concerns or suggestions!

Moose Love,
